Roseberry Topping North Yorkshire Country Walk

Roseberry Topping North Yorkshire Country Walk

We parked the car in Great Ayton where Captain James Cook studied as a child, and headed for the public footpath in Newton Road to commence the actual walk to Roseberry Topping & further onto Captain Cook's Monument at Easby Moor. The day of the walk was an exceptional Spring day '27th of March 2012' and was infact one of the very best days in almost thirty years, the sun was very warm with virtually no wind. Roseberry Topping is formed from sandstone, it is also known as the 'Yorkshire Matterhorn' due to its sugarloaf appearance, in 1912 half of the sandstone split away leaving what we can see today. On a clear day from the summit you can see the entire Cleveland Plain which can stretch for upto fifty miles with views of the North Pennines to the West, alittle closer is the sprawling industrial town of Middlesborough. Roseberry Topping is 1049 feet / 320 metres in height. OS Grid Reference NZ579126 OS Landranger Map No. 193
